My Love Letter to the Cinema

E-mail Print PDF

Some of you may know me, some of you may not. I’ve spent about five years writing for TTNMC. Throughout most of my reviews and articles during the past years, I have attempted to approach my subjects with a degree of objectivity which, as most journalists will admit, is a fairly futile battle. No matter how great a distance a journalist approaches a subject with, his or her writing will always reflect a figment of their identity. With this being said, I would like, riffing on a quote from “The Wizard of Oz,” to reveal the man behind the curtain.

I wish, however, not to reveal myself in a self-important manner but, as most of us do, through what interests me. Being a film studies student, the choice is quite obvious. Struggling to avoid the rather trite task of coming up with a ranking and the inclusion of “traditional” favorites, the following fifteen films have had a great effect on me and I can feel I can safely assert that at least one of them will greatly affect you.

So, excluding of the two films that have had the greatest influence on my love of film (“Star Wars” and “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure”), I present to you, in alphabetical order, my love letter to the cinema in the form of fifteen wonderful films.

The Best DVDs of 2005

E-mail Print PDF

Just a bit of a disclaimer before I set out on publishing my rather fluid “Best DVDs of the Year” list.

The problem with me and “best of” lists is that by the time I get around to really checking out everything a given year has to offer, it is six months later. So, with that being said, here (without introduction) is my list of the ten best DVDs of the year, with a few special awards.

Adam Carolla Interview

E-mail Print PDF

Monkey X here. I've been absent lately, but you have Burt Reynolds to thank for that. I went to a party at his place a while ago (Burt's one of the few guys I knew in the old days who still talks to me), went unconscious after doing one too many lines off some hooker's tits, and woke up in a Tijuana holding cell. Anyway, a few thousand pesos later, I ran into Adam Carolla at the bar of “Hard Bodies” in Reno. That's when my week really started to drag.

Monkey X's Stalker Journal - Smallville Set

E-mail Print PDF

Monkey XIt was bound to happen sooner or later.  Eventually, someone was going to get it into his head to explore the creative wasteland that is Vancouver, Canadia.  Steven Dougherty was going to, but then he suddenly developed self-esteem, so I figured I'd do it.  I needed to get out of town for a few days anyway.  No reason.

Film Theory 101: A Critical Analysis of Auteur Theory

E-mail Print PDF

I have not posted much lately.  Most of this is because of my class load right now and finishing up my film studies major.  I thought a lot about posting some of papers and I thought it might be a good idea.  It would be something new and fresh aside from the general criticism offered here.  So, with that being said, I offer up my first film theory paper on the auteur theory.
