Day 104: Skyline

E-mail Print PDF

SkylineYesterday I drove the whole family down to Shea Stadium Citi Field to see the Mets play.  The team was honoring Darryl Strawberry, Dwight "Doc" Gooden, Davey Johnson and Frank Cashen with a ceremony to induct them into the team's Hall of Fame.  I was more than a little excited.  The ceremony was great but the game that followed is one best forgotten.

I'm a bit late posting a photo for that day because I took nearly 400 of them and just didn't have the energy left to go through them all by the time we got home.  I have several shots of planes roaring over head, which is a common sight at Shea Citi Field.  One of my most vivid memories from my very first trip to watch the Mets play is of a jet that came over the stadium so low that I swear I could count the lug nuts on the landing gear wheels.  The team took the old skyline from the top of the scoreboard and brought it to the new stadium, so this one seemed appropriate.

Day 103: Parade

ParadeThere was a big parade of all the county fire companies in my town today.  This was my favorite shot of well over a hundred that I took.

Day 102: Lunacy

LunacyI have a cheap tripod.  It's served me well for years but it was a cheapie model that I picked up at WalMart.  This was the second time that I wished for something better.  Taking a photo of a really distant object makes tiny movements highly exaggerated in the image.  And the tiny movement of the camera's shutter opening was enough to create just a minute movement in the entire camera because the cheap tripod can't suppress it.  And it would show up in the picture as motion blur.

Eventually I piled enough heavy objects on the camera and tripod to quell that motion and allow me to take this fairly crisp shot of the moon.  But it definitely has me mentally shopping for a new piece of equipment.

Day 101: Stalking Dinner

Stalking PreyHere we see the rare northern tortoise shell house cat stalking her prey. House cats are noted for their ability to sneak up on the notoriously skittish corn kernel.

Day 100: Thistle

ThistleIf you think I'm the sort of person who will make a big deal about reaching a big round number like 100, you clearly don't know me very well.  It's just a number.  At least 99 let me make a vague hockey related joke in the title.  So here's a picture of a weed growing in my back yard.  I really went all out for you.

Day 99: The Not So Great One

The Not So Great OneThis is the burdock plant.  It's a nasty weed that grows prolifically in my yard.  I can't stand these things.  Sure, I've made it look pretty here but then they dry out and those little hooks catch on everything.  These things were apparently the inspiration for velcro.  But velco isn't anywhere near as effective at sticking as this stuff.  There's nothing more annoying than trying to pry those things out of a dogs coat or your own sweater.  Naturally these are growing in a spot the mower can't reach.  Ugh.

Day 98: Belly of a Grasshopper

Belly of a GrasshopperThis is an angle I never really expected to get of a grasshopper.  But it climbed right up the window so I kind of felt obligated to get this shot.
